Leonotis leonurus is also known as wild dagga ('wild cannabis') and lion's tail. Wild dagga leaves were smoked by the Khoikhoi and the San in Africa for its euphoric effect. It grows mainly in southern and eastern Africa.

In traditional African medicine, Leonotis was widely used as a part of many different treatments. It was also used in case of a snakebite and as a charm to keep snakes away.
