Magic mushrooms and magic truffles in nature

Magic mushrooms and magic truffles certainly are magical but in terms of their composition and function, they are not that much different from their non-psychoactive cousins. Mushrooms and truffles are part of the same organism, the fungus, with mushrooms sprouting above ground ensuring its reproduction via the distribution of spores. Mushrooms are the fruiting body of the fungus and even though it’s the part everyone’s most familiar with, it only represents a fraction of what a fungus is all about. Below ground, the mycelium can reach impressive sizes and sometimes mushrooms spread over a large area come from the same mycelium. This body of tissue is responsible for the absorption of nutrients and this where truffles, or sclerotia, come in. These more dense parts are formed from mycelium tissue and function mainly as food reserve for when times are hard. These sclerotia can become detached from the main mycelium, germinate and sprout their own mushrooms.

Differences between magic mushrooms and magic truffles in terms of consumption

So why should you prefer one to the other? Magic mushrooms can be relatively easily cultivated in a short time-span. Some varieties in combination with certain growing methods allow you to harvest after only three weeks. Cultivating truffles generally takes a whole lot longer, which should come as no surprise given that truffles are a lot denser than mushrooms. Truffles require a dark environment and will be ready for consumption after about 15 weeks. They contain very small amounts of moisture while magic mushrooms, like any mushroom, consists predominantly of water. Magic truffles, therefore, tend to dry a whole lot quicker than shrooms. Another advantage of truffles is their consistency in terms of psilocybin and psilocin contents. Magic mushrooms from the same variety can end up looking very differently in terms of shape and size,  with results in varying amounts of psychoactive compounds. Finally, truffles have a lingering bitter and acidic aftertaste while shrooms are easier on the palate.

Effects of magic mushrooms and truffles

As mentioned before, shrooms and truffles have identical effects. You’ll be likely to take a backseat and let the whims of your creative thinking and revitalised sensory input take over. Colours, textures, shapes and forms tend to appear new and exciting, an especially pronounced aspect when you’re surrounded by nature. A psilocybin trip tends to take you to the deep end of whatever you might be thinking or feeling at a particular moment. Slight impulses from your surroundings pull you back out and make you follow yet another train of thought. With new perceptual input, it’s all the more exciting to work with colours, draw, paint and sculpt. It’s also a perfect way to connect with friends in ways that are entirely new and exciting. Did you know you could use psilocybin mushrooms and truffles for microdosing? Check out our microdosing category and our encyclopedia page on microdosing for more information.

Legality of magic mushrooms and magic truffles

Fresh magic truffles are legal in the Netherlands while magic mushrooms have been banned. This doesn’t make much sense and is more than likely the result of a political compromise following a small number of heavily mediatised and very unfortunate accidents. The government wanted to ban the culprit - in this case, the popular and internationally known magic mushrooms - without making psilocybin completely inaccessible. Selling dried truffles is illegal, as drying is considered an operation in a production process, which would violate the prohibition on extracting the psychoactive compounds from the natural fungi. Even though magic mushrooms can no longer be sold in smartshops, everything you need to grow mushrooms is still completely legal.

Growing your very own magic mushrooms

On our encyclopedia page, you can find out even more about the wondrous world of magic mushrooms and truffles, including an accessible introduction on how to grow your own magic mushrooms.

Grow kits

At Azarius, we sell grow kits for beginners and more advanced growers. Ready-to-grow kits come with a cultivation box and a plastic bag with an air filter. Just unpack and let the kit work its magic. More advanced kits require you to mix your own substrate and inject spores included in the kit (Easy grow kit) or require separate spore syringes (Master grow kit). Our ready-to-grow kit doesn’t require watering and is ready for harvest in three weeks. The Easy and Master kits only need to be watered once. The Easy kit can be harvested after six weeks and is available with multiple spores. Our Master kit produces large yields and can be harvested multiple times. Our grow kits are available in Ecuador, Thai, Cambodia and B+ mushroom varieties. Read our handy guide to find out which grow kit would suit your needs.
