Kratom (also known as ketum, kratum or korth) is indigenous to Thailand and Malaysia where it is used as a stimulant, sedative and a substitute for opium. The main alkaloid in kratom is mitragynine, known for its positive effects on one's mood. It stimulates the body and increases activity. In general, the effects are stimulating and euphoric at a lower doses and more calming and analgesic at higher doses. These effects are noticeable after 10 to 20 minutes and can last for several hours.

PRODUCTION

Kratom originally comes from South East Asia and is still grown traditionally in Thailand and Maleysia. Kratom refers to the leaves, fresh or dried of the evergreen tree Mitragyna speciosa Korthals, which grows abundantly in the jungles and forests of South East Asia, in particular in the southern part of Thailand. The tree can grow to up to 40m in height and takes about 8 to 10 years before it produces large, kratom-rich leaves and is ready to be harvested. These tall trees tend to have an impressive root system to keep them upright in the soft, humid jungle soil. These elaborate roots play an important role in protecting riverbanks against erosion. Planting the Mitragyna speciosa Korthals could therefore be an important alternative to palm trees for many farmers in the region, the latter being far less suitable to protecting riverbanks. This traditional cure-all has recently gained notoriety in the West as we’ve learned to isolate and study its principal psychoactive compounds. Synthesizing these compounds is not economically viable, therefore we continue to enjoy kratom’s benefits the natural way. Kratom leaves are dried and ground, then either kept in this form or transformed into pastes, extracts and resins.

CHEMISTRY

The active alkaloids are mainly mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine. While mitragynine is by far the most common, 7-Hydroxymitragynine appears to be many times more potent. Both compounds interact with opioid receptors in the brain, spinal cord and digestive tract but also with 5-HT2A serotonergic, dopaminergic and alpha2-adrenergic receptors. The range of receptors with which these alkaloids interact corresponds with the broad scale of effects attributed to using kratom. 

EFFECTS

The leaves of the evergreen tree Mitragyna speciosa Korthals are a staple stimulant for labourers and farmers who would chew fresh leaves or use dried leaves in tea. This practice is reminiscent of the way coca leaves are chewed in the Andes region in South America. In traditional medicine, kratom leaves would be used to treat a variety of ailments and afflictions (diarrhea, fever, pains and aches, parasites,...) or as a sedative.

In lower doses, kratom is a stimulant and useful in a variety of social and work situations while in higher doses, it acts as a sedative. As a stimulant, kratom tends to elevate your mood and makes you want to go out, do things and be sociable. Kratom has been reported to act as an aphrodisiac and could potentially counter erectile dysfunction.

As a sedative, kratom will numb any physical or emotional discomfort and induce drowsiness. 7-Hydroxymitragynine is one of the most powerful naturally occurring analgesics (pain reducing substances) and considerably more potent than morphine while being far less addictive. Mitragynine also has analgesic properties and could be considered as a substitute for codeine.  

Kratom has also gained widespread popularity as a substitute for opioid painkillers and could be a potential substitute for methadone in combating symptoms of heroin withdrawal. Even though kratom has the potential to generate dependence, its withdrawal symptoms are mild in comparison with other opioids and usually dissipate relatively quickly. Note that the use of kratom has gained traction in combating withdrawal symptoms from opioids (synthetically produced medication interacting with opioid receptors) as well as with opiates (substances derived from opium extracts). We recommend consulting a physician before considering using kratom as a substitute for opioids or opiates.

HOW TO USE

In order to enjoy kratom’s stimulating effects, 3 to 5 grams of dried, ground kratom could be considered a regular dose. Effects are noticeable after about 10 to 20 minutes and should last anywhere between 3 to 6 hours, depending on the dose. 10 to 25 grams of dried, ground kratom will act  as a sedative and analgesic. Kratom has somewhat of a pronounced, bitter taste so we recommend ‘chasing’ your kratom with something sweet.

Kratom can also be ingested as an extract, tea and tincture and doses vary accordingly. SIDE EFFECTS

Kratom may produce nausea or a light headache as part of its initial onset. Other potential side effects include a reduced appetite, a dry mouth, slightly impaired vision and more frequent urination. Kratom should not be used in combination with other stimulants and sedatives as this could lead to irregular breathing and high blood pressure. Prolonged and regular kratom use could lead to liver damage and skin discoloration. You should absolutely refrain from using kratom when taking MAOI or SSRI antidepressants.
