According to a recent article, a group of tourists hitch-hiked as much as 700 kilometres (435 miles) to find the Peyote cactus, a spineless bulbous cactus which contains many alkaloids. The most notable active alkaloid is mescaline, a strong psychedelic substance used for centuries in sacred rituals by natives throughout North and South America.
When ingested, mescaline can lead to hallucinations, which users often describe as a beautiful, deeply transcendental experience. The San Pedro is another cactus containing mescaline, but the Peyote trip is known to be stronger (unfortunately, so is the nausea side-effect) and can last six to twelve hours.
Tourists flocking to the Wirikuta desert in San Luis Potosi State respond to the alluring call of the Peyote, willing to undergo the serious challenges the harsh deserts subjects them to. The locals have a saying: "You do not find peyote. It finds you."
Peyote expert Jose Luis Bustos warns: “Peyote is not a drug, it is a sacred plant. And it must be treated with great respect, because if someone does something bad, the plant just may punish him, treat him badly.”
Luckily at Azarius finding a mescaline cactus is as easy as finding the Cacti category in our smartshop. Note that most cacti we sell need to grow for some time before they can consumed.
