Vaporized cannabis is proven painkiller, says new research

Researchers at the University of Davis, California, looked at the effects of vaporized cannabis on pain and found that it can cause a reduction in pain in patients with neuropathy. The results of the study were published online in the Journal of Pain.

The study was conducted as a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, where the analgesic effects of cannabis inhaled with a vaporizer was evaluated in 39 subjects, the majority of whom were experiencing neuropathic pain despite traditional treatment. Subjects inhaled cannabis of either moderate THC (3.53 percent), low dose THC (1.29 percent), or zero THC (placebo). They continued to take all other medicine as per routine during a 3-4 week study period. Subjects were asked to indicate the intensity of their current pain on a pre-defined scale.

The researchers reported on both the low and medium THC doses a statistically significant 30% reduction in pain intensity when compared to placebo. In other words: Vaporized cannabis, even at low doses, may present an effective option for patients with treatment-resistant neuropathic pain.
