Burning Man 2012
This tradition is the brainchild of Larry Harvey, who proposed the festive cremation of giant dummy in Baker Beach, San Francisco. Since 1990 this event takes place in the Nevada. The Burning Man brings more than 50 000 people (called “Burners”) from America, Europe and Asia to create a temporary city in the desert. During this one week, it becomes one of the busiest cities of Nevada. This festival attracts all those who want to be in a unconventional environment, or the 'experimental community' as the Burning Man website describes it's audience.
For one week, the Burners dress up or otherwise express their creativity in a variety of way, be it dance or artwork.
The festival finishes with the burning of a human effigy, expressing all internal barriers such as prejudice
But The Burning Man doesn't have one singular focus. The festival is characterized by its diversity: the community, artwork, absurdity and self-expression. Read more on the Burning Man website.
Burning Man 2012 is held from August 27 to September 3.
