Auroville, an alternative lifestyle

18-06-2012

Auroville is a town in the north of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, in India. It was created in 1968 by a French woman, Mirra Alfassa (Mirra Richard) better-know as 'The Mother'. She was the companion of the Indian Philosopher, Sri Aurobindo.

The town is "the place of a universal community, where men and women learn to live in peace, in perfect harmony, beyond all beliefs, nationalities and political views". It's charter states as point 1: "Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness."

Among the Auroville inhabitants are people from 45 nationalities. In the beginning, Auroville was built in a desert, but the first aurovilians shaped the town to look like a true tropical garden on the red rock.

This is a unique experience for the human unity and transformation of consciousness, through a sustainable lifestyle. One of the purposes of Auroville is to be self-sufficient.

The town was designed by Roger Anger, a French Architect. Auroville looks like a spiral galaxy, which reminds us of the spiritual; the communion between Human and Nature. The town was planned to accommodate 50.000 people, though at this point it is inhabited by around 2.000 people. These aurovilians have no leader, no hierarchy. However, by unwritten law, seniority confers some moral authority.

What can be found in Auroville?

There are several areas. Matrimandir, the Soul of the City is the spiritual heart of the city. North, there is the industrial area that produces with strictly eco-friendly methods and is to be completely self-sufficient. The residential area, of course. The international area which aims to create a living demonstration of human unity. The cultural area where we find all the educational aspects and the last one, the green belt that contains organic farms, dairies, orchards, forests and wildlife areas.
