Strawberries may protect stomach from harmful effects of alcohol

We all know eating fruits is good and healthy for the body. This facts seems further strengthened by news last week that a group of researchers have confirmed that strawberries have a beneficial effect on the antioxidant defence mechanisms and may protect against the harmful effects of alcohol on the stomach.

The research group conducted the study on lab rats and found that the consumption of strawberries negated part of the damage that alcohol abuse can do to the stomach.
Dr. Sara Tulipani: "The positive effects of strawberries are not only linked to their antioxidant capacity and high content of phenolic compounds (anthocyans) but also to the fact that they activate the antioxidant defences and enzymes of the body”.

Alcohol can have various harmful effects on the stomach, including gastric ulcers. The rats that were given a strawberry extract experienced less ulcers, leading to the conclusions that a rich strawberry diet can help to prevent gastric illnesses, by improving antioxidant defences of the human body. Treatments for ulcers and other gastric pathologies are currently in need of new protective medicines with antioxidant properties. The compounds found within strawberries could be the answer.

Another researcher noted specifically that strawberries do not mitigate the effects of getting drunk. Perhaps we’ll find another fruit for that one day…
