The VLOS is the national association for companies involved in the production, distribution and sale of smartshop products. In 1993 the first smartshop, Conscious Dreams, opened its doors in Amsterdam. More stores followed in the Netherlands and other countries. In the Netherlands there are about 100 stores that sell smartshop products, the majority of which are located in Amsterdam. These Dutch stores have united in one trade organisation: VLOS.
From its inception in 1997, the VLOS has focused its efforts on the legal sale of psychoactive substances and related products. VLOS maintains contact with the government and local municipality. It also provides regular courses for smartshop employees.
When a shop joins the VLOS, it must agree to the house rules. Among these rules it's listed that the sale of products to minors is forbidden, that the products on offer should be legal to sell in the Netherlands and that clear information has to be provided. Store employees need to regularly follow a course organised by the VLOS to keep up-to-date.
