Police cracking down on Goa criminals


The ancient Hindu city of Goa, which in the 1960s became a popular destination on the hippie trail, is where much of today's electronic dance music originated. In the late 80's and early 90's Goa Trance started to enjoy commercial success with musicians like Paul Oakenfold, Infected Mushroom, Hallucinogen and Juno Reactor. Goa parties have a definitive visual aspect - the use of fluorescent paint is common on clothing and on decorations such as tapestries. The graphics on these decorations are usually associated with topics such as aliens, Hinduism, mushrooms, shamanism and technology.

For decades Goa, which is known for its beautiful white beaches, has been both a popular tourist destination as well as a favorite gathering place of the psychedelic community. But it seems that in recent years the idealistic atmosphere is disappearing and crime is on the rise.

This weekend Indian police arrested at least 40 people in an overnight crackdown on suspected criminals and drug dealers in Goa following a rash of attacks on tourists, a top police officer said.
