Hello fellow psychonauts!
More relaxed cannabis laws in the UKConfusion still surrounds cannabis, its use and punishment since the British Government recently reclassified the drug. In the biggest shake-up of Britain's drug laws for 30 years, the drug was downgraded across the UK from class B to class C, the same status as anabolic steroids and anti-depressants. The move was intended to free up police time to allow them to tackle harder drugs. The possession, use or trading of the drug remains an offence, but there will be a "presumption against arrest" of cannabis users. This would mean people possessing small quantities of the drug will normally get a formal warning and have the drug removed instead of facing arrest. But people found dealing could still be arrested, especially if found dealing to vulnerable people. First cannabis cafe's in the USIn the past two years, a sort of renaissance has been taking place in a section of downtown Oakland. A string of shops offering medical marijuana to card-holding patients has emerged. The dispensaries drew crowds of people into an otherwise deserted downtown Oakland. With jazz bands playing and street vendors offering various alimentary delicacies, the area took on more of the aspect of a low-key street party than a depressed urban district. Or more like Amsterdam, land of the cannabis cafe, than other mid-sized American cities, thus the "Oaksterdam" moniker. But the number of establishments offering medical marijuana has continued to increase, and not all of them have been rigorous in ensuring that only medical marijuana card-holders can buy their product. Some appear to be fly-by-night operations, with no phone numbers or business licenses. Now the Oakland City Council is considering a measure that would regulate and limit the enterprises. Members of the Bay Area medical marijuana community said they approved of regulation in principle, but had big problems with some of the measure's particulars. "Regulation is a positive step -- if you don't look at the details of this ordinance," said Jeff Jones, founder of the Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative. Internet plays a large role in peoples New Year's resolutions for slimming and giving up smokingIn January 2004 the popularity of search terms relating to New Year's resolutions has risen spectacularly. On Dutch search engines such as Ilse 'quit smoking' and 'lose weight' were very especially popular. The increasing popularity of these key words indicates that people are intensively consulting the Internet to gather information and to find advice, support and companions to endure their intention to loss weight and quit smoking. On Ilse '(quit) smoking' was listed as number 2 of most popular search terms, while 'lose weight" was at number 15. Last year these words were not in the top 50. The high number of people giving up smoking in Holland reflects stricter laws concerning smoking in public and rising tobacco prices. Internationally lo-carb/no-carb diets scored very high. 'South Beach Diet' ranked number 5 and 'Atkins Diet' number 8. Relating to the new US ban, the search 'Ephedra' scored high at number 9.
