Ugress - Cowboy Desperado

Ugress is one of the projects of Gisle Martens Meyer from Norway. Cowboy Desperado, his third album, is totally in the vein of his earlier work: funky, dark, funny, melancholic, happy, instrumental and sometimes vocally backed up by Therese Vadem. Very diverse indeed.

Songs like the title song demonstrate Ugress' sample cutting skills. He makes actors from 70's films rap their lines to contemporary head-nodding breaks, totally synchronized to the rhythm and the rest of the track. His chords and melodies are just as cool, which really sets him apart from electronic composers focusing on beats and tricks. There's actually a lot of sensitive harmonies spread out over the album, usually supported by his trademark, the funky breakbeat.
If you like breakbeats, bigbeats or triphop, you should definitely check out Ugress. He's got a very recognizable, funky and crispy style, while adding all kinds of cinematic and humorous sampled flavours. Some tracks are pretty serious, but in general Ugress keeps a nice flow that can be relaxing when played at low volume, or uplifting when played at high volume.
